One killed in road accident

Kathmandu, Jan 24: One person was killed in a bike accident at Panipokhari in the capital early this morning after losing control of the vehicle, police said. He was riding the motorbike (Ba 32 Pa 8234).
The deceased is Arjun B K, 20, of Kabilas of Nuwakot.
Critically injured BK died while undergoing treatment at Tribhuvan University, Teaching Hospital Maharajgunj, police added.

Thick fog and cold wave affects life in eastern region

Biratnagar, Feb 7: The cold wave has adversely affected the normal life in eastern region for the past few days.

Dense fog in the wake of a cold wave for the past four days has adversely affected the potato plants as well as the livestock.

People are most of the time staying indoors to escape the cold. Movement of people in Biratnagar bazaar has also decreased due to the cold.

Amita Jha, a housewife, said that mostly housewives have been hit hard and are suffering from common cold and cough as they have to use water time and again in course of doing household chores.

Similarly, less number of service seekers is found visiting the government offices in Biratnagar as compared to previous days. The Kathmandu-Biratnagar flights have also been disrupted for the past couple of days.

Meanwhile, farmers are worried after the potato plants started drying up due to the extreme cold.

Over 50 % children suffering from acute malnutrition

Birgunj, Jan 24: Over fifty per cent children from socially and economically backward communities in Parsa, a district in the central Tarai, have been found suffering from acute malnutrition.
A study held carried out by equitable development hurdles analysis programme implemented to identity obstructions to attain equitable development in 10 extremely poor and backward settlements ended with this finding.
Bagahi, Bahuaridari, Bikhampur, Gadi, Lahawarthakari, Nirmalbasti, Bhiswa, Parshurampur, Tulsiwarwa and Shiwarwa were the village where the programme was implemented. Lack of sanitation awareness and pure drinking water facility, poverty, domestic violence, practice of child labour, dowry system and child marriage, lack of accessibility to health services are among the obstructions to attain social justice and equitable development in these backward communities.
Besides, one fourth population in these villages are unaware of consequences of open-defecation.
There are actually many such data that highlight the obstacles to equitable development, District Development Committee Parsa Information Office and resource person of the Programme Shambhu Khuswaha said, “Plan and programme should target to remove such obstacles and challenges.”

1 killed, 22 injured in eastern Indonesia quake

JAKARTA, Jan. 18 (Xinhua) — One

person was killed, 22 others injured and more than 200 houses damaged after a shallow quake hit Maluku province in eastern Indonesia on Sunday, spokesman of the national disaster agency said on Monday.

Three of the injured were in serious condition and the rest sustained light injuries in Buru district, spokesman of the National Disaster Management Agency Sutopo Purwo Nugroho told Xinhua. As many as 239 houses were damaged with 68 of them severely destroyed and one mosque was also damaged in the district, he said.

The 5.4-magnitude quake struck Maluku province at 6:22 a.m. Jakarta time on Sunday (2322 GMT Saturday) with the epicenter 66 km southeast of Buru Selatan and a depth of 10 km.

Gunmen kidnapped 3 Americans in Baghdad

BAGHDAD, Jan. 17 (Xinhua) Unidentified gunmen kidnapped three Americans in Baghdad, an Iraqi news agency reported on Sunday. The three Americans, who worked as military trainers, were at the house of a translator in the southern district of Doura, Baghdad, when a group of gunmen wearing military uniforms stormed the house and took them away, NINA quoted unnamed sources as saying.

The translator who invited the three Americans to his house was also abducted, the agency said. Earlier, the pan-Arab news channel Al Arabiya reported that three Americans were kidnapped in Baghdad, without giving further details, but mentioned that the U.S. State Department said they are aware of the report and are working with the Iraqi authorities to locate and recover them.
